Over 12 years ago I started amigurumi, which is crochet or knit (in my case crochet) creatures or objects out of yarn. I’ve made some dolls but mostly enjoy making animals.
Today my husband was going through our garage, which we’ve had to use for storage since having to tear the house down, and he happened across one of my very first attempts at amigurumi. I had bought a crochet book that had several patterns for making dogs and thought I’d try to make my own dog.

I know it’s pretty wonky and ratty looking, it was one of my guests l first attempts. And, unfortunately, rats have gotten into our garage and started making a mess of things there (hopefully our new barn cats will get rid of them soon), so that doesn’t help either.
I have come a long way since I first started and I’m glad that I’ve stuck with this hobby for so long. It has definitely been something I’ve enjoyed, even though I’ve had my frustrations here and there. Amigurumi has been more fun than just making blankets, hats, and scarves, which is where I originally started in the 6th grade (amigurumi came much later).
One of the things I’ve really loved about making amigurumi is creating my own designs. I love the challenge of pattern writing and seeing these little critters come to life, so to speak. Here’s an updated version I did of my dog as a snuggler. He has since passed away but I will always have a fondness for making him and my husband’s dog (who also passed) into amigurumi toys.

If any of you are thinking of trying out amigurumi for yourself, I highly recommend it and there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube to get you started. And of course, if you have any crochet related questions feel free to reach out, I’m more than happy to answer questions.
