What is Wonderment Day?

Wonderment day is the day that we meet with a child survivor that was nominated and their guardian so the child can pick out their very own crocheted companion as a gift from us.

Why Wonderment Day?

Every child deserves to be loved and feel special and we want to give them their own special day. All children should be filled with wonder about the world around them but childlike wonder can easily become tarnished and diminish by abuse and trauma. We hope to encourage children with a renewed sense of wonder, through play and comfort, by providing them with a handmade companion. We also chose to name the day that a child receives their crocheted toy so as not to cause any suspicion if the date is outside of any holidays, birthdays, or even half birthdays. (If you are nominating a child and would rather try and schedule for your own special day instead please let us know.)

Why do you meet in person?

We let them choose their own toy because we don’t always get to choose what happens to us in life. Choice is important to those who have survived abuse and trauma. Often times they are prone to becoming people pleasures, sacrificing their own needs and desires to appease others. This tendency can stem from a need for safety and acceptance. Not being able to make decisions can later lead to feelings of loss of identity and anxiety, on top of effects abuse and trauma. By allowing them to choose we are attempting to encourage them in their own decision making skills, which are still developing, and hope to give them something that can be their very own. What may seem like a small gesture to most can be a big deal to a child survivor.

Privacy

We understand privacy concerns, especially for those who have been through trauma or abuse. We will never ask for any details of past events of survivors. We will never share information given to us with others. We do have open ears and arms if you need someone to talk to and of course we will always offer to pray with you or for you and your child(ren).

What we do need

We do ask for child age range, gender, favorite colors, favorite animals, and any other likes or dislikes to give us a better idea of what type of toys to bring. Pictures of the handmade toys for Wonderment Day will be uploaded soon but in the meantime please see our shop for examples of items we have on hand. Custom toys can be made in specific colors but we do not typically make characters from books, movies, or TV shows with the exception of Winnie the Pooh themed animals. Please keep in mind that extra time is needed for custom toys that are not currently on hand. [Note: The only items we exclude are car swings since those are for decoration and not meant to be played with.]

Available in East Texas

We live in Nacogdoches, Texas and are able to travel to nearby areas within reason. Please inquire about distances if you would like to nominate a child and are outside of our area.
